Opinion: Ashley must open his pockets to land ace that could transform Newcastle’s season

|

It’s been a season to forget for Newcastle. We’ve largely been underwhelming in the Premier League, with a lack of investment and vision off the field evident in the performances of those on the pitch.

What the club really needs is a big signing to kickstart a new era at the club, and Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron seems like the perfect man to achieve that.

The playmaker has impressed in the MLS over the last couple of years, and his tally of 13 goals and 11 assists this term speaks volumes about his talent.

With a brilliant range of passing, a fantastic enthusiasm for getting forward and sheer technical ability that would put him in a class of his own at Newcastle, Almiron could be the sort of player that could help to transform the Magpies into a genuine Premier League force.

Significantly, Newcastle have apparently been put off the prospect of signing him because of his £100,000-per-week demands. However, in this case, Ashley just needs to open his pockets.

The reality is that he’s been lucky not to have had to spend that sort of money already at the club. But that’s why Newcastle are stagnating, we need investment.

In the modern game, a £100,000-per-week salary isn’t out of the ordinary for a top player, and that’s exactly what Almiron is. He’s what we need, and that salary is what top players demand. Ashley won’t like it, but as long as he is in charge, he needs to back the team.

If not, we risk falling even lower.
