Opinion: 25-year-old striker would be a waste of money for Newcastle

|

Newcastle United are supposedly going to challenge Everton for the signature of Yussuf Poulsen in January – as the Toon look to strengthen their forward line.

Newcastle currently have Joelinton and Yoshinori Muto as the only strikers capable of starting a game.

Andy Carroll will be used as an impact substitute until January, and Dwight Gayle is still injured.

So, the Toon do need another forward to give Joelinton some support, but I am not sure Poulsen is the man.

His goalscoring record for RB Leipzig last season was good netting 19 goals in all competitions and acting as the perfect foil for Timo Werner.

He has the physicality to survive in the Premier League but is he not too similar to what Newcastle currently possess?

Poulsen is a target man type striker but both Joelinton and Carroll are of a similar mould – so surely Newcastle need a different type of forward.

Perhaps a player who is more technical and quicker.

Poulsen is supposed to be one of Marco Silva’s targets; however, the pressure is building on the Everton boss and if he does leave the Toffees Newcastle may not face any competition to sign Poulsen.

I believe, though, that at this moment in time he is not what Newcastle need and they should look to bring in someone who can act as a foil to Carroll or Joelinton.

Poulsen is too similar to what the Toon already have.
