Newcastle’s Premier League season continued with a one-nil defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Despite, as the title says, being on ‘the front foot’ for most of the game (especially the second half) Newcastle’s year started with another defeat leaving them in the bottom three after Laurent Koscielny’s second half winner in the final 20-minutes.

The best Newcastle chance came to Georginio Wijnaldum with the Dutchman denied by Gunners ‘keeper Petr Cech.

These were the other results.

Liverpool’s up and down spell of late recently continued with West Ham seeing off the Reds two-nil at Upton Park with rivals (Liverpool’s) Man United ending a poor end to the year with a two-one win over Swansea.

Arsenal kept top spot with narrow one-nil win over Newcastle (as we know) with Man City coming back from behind to earn a late two-one win at Watford to keep up the pressure with Leicester losing a little ground with a nil-nil draw at the King Power Stadium against a 10-man Bournemouth side.

Things were looking bleak for Aston Villa going out of 2015 but 2016 didn’t get any better with the three-one loss at the Stadium of Light leaving (even in January) them as a ‘near certainty’ you feel to go down….
