The Newcastle United Supporters Trust have launched an ambitious scheme to try and gain a small stake in Newcastle United Football Club.

The 1892 pledge encourages Toon fans to part with a small amount of money to raise large funds that will hopefully be used to purchase a percentage in the club.

It is a project years in the making but its announcement comes at the perfect time. As a football club we are teetering on the abyss, with a third relegation of the Mike Ashley era looming large.

It is exhausting that constant genuine complaints and protests repeatedly fall on deaf ears and if there was a strong fan representation on the board, this would surely cease to be the case. This is a chance for us to be heard.

Of course, with fan/owner relations beyond any repair, this would only ever happen in the event of a takeover and what better way to begin a new ear with the supporters trust managing to secure a small stake in the club we all love?

Also, the Saudi PIF/Amanda Staveley/Reuben brothers takeover that is still set to be on the table in some capacity would not be affected by this exciting scheme with The Athletic reporting that the NUST has made the buyers aware of their plans, and they have been received positively.

The scheme has been greatly received on Twitter with club legends Rob Lee, Warren Barton and Alan Shearer amongst those to come out to support the fan led initiative.

Of course, you will never get 100% support with any idea but I am yet to think of a single negative for this scheme.

If NUST can gain a stake in NUFC it would mea fan representation in the hierarchy and potentially a greater say for fans on how our club is ran, which can only be an overwhelmingly positive thing.

The worst case scenario is that they are unable to purchase a small % of the club. In this eventuality, the trust have said that the money would instead be distributed to local charities making this initiative a win-win surely?

Fans have been asked to give as little or as much as they can with all donations over Ā£1 accepted. Personally, I opted for the Ā£11 a month direct debit option and look forward to hearing developments on the brilliant scheme.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the lack of supporters in the stadium has truly shown how vital the role of the fan is, with the product offered nowhere near as good with empty stands as the backdrop.

The governing bodies that rule our game have shown a complete disinterest to consider fans when making decisions and this is our chance to show just how important we are. Football is nothing without fans.
