NUFC One Step Closer

Newcastle having no game on a Saturday is usually a sickener but the way things have been going and us on a run, today was good to see other team struggles and nerves.

As it happens, results were always going to go in our favour with some relegation-threatened sides facing each other as our ten point cushion was left intact.

Southampton is the team in that third relegation spot and they threatened to make things nervy for sides around them by going two goals up against ‘on the beach’ Chelsea but relegation nerves and a blend of quality saw calm restored and Chelsea score three in nine minutes. Having been there in recent seasons, it’s horrible to play well and lose but that’s generally what happens to sides that are nailed on to go down. With only 28 points and only 15 more to play for, they’re running out of time.

Crystal Palace and Brighton faced off in another game where we couldn’t lose regardless of the score. Palace winning this one 3-2 and closing the gap even tighter on a clutch of sides around them including Brighton.

Huddersfield and Watford played each other and Watford were the better side who looked like scoring on countless occasions but Huddersfield won this right at the death 1-0 to ease their relegation fears slightly and condemn Watford to forget the beach towel thoughts and worry that they are being dragged into a safety battle.

Everton, who are just above us in the table, played Swansea and saw it end 1-1. Swansea have been lauded recently for a good spell of results that had seen them pull away from trouble only to be dragged right back into it in the past few games. They currently lie one place and 5 points from the trap door.
