Recent transfer windows here at Newcastle under Mike Ashley have failed to hit the spot with not quite enough being done.

Even going into this premier league season, it was done so with veiled warnings from Rafa Benitez as his frustration at weak positions were reported from many in the know.

Arguably under strength and for me needing another goalkeeper, left back, central midfielder and at least one more striker, the last thing we would need is any playing having a fall out or another having an injury although all these instances are regular in any club’s season.

With no guarantee that Mike Ashley will allow the money we have to be spent and against a backdrop of takeover whisper, getting at least two of what we need could well be the difference between seeing the value of the club collapse and the trousering of the premier league loot for at least another year. A potential difference of £100m.

Yesterday saw Dwight Gayle limp around in the final few minutes and Rafa Benitez reveal in his press conference afterwards that he had a stiff calf, factor in the disappearance and the not yet revealed reason why Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to make the squad again and there looks work to be done in the attacking department.

It’s fairly obvious to presume that ‘Mitro’ is available for sale and that Gayle would probably be sold to a championship club for at the very least his transfer fee back. That £25m+ would certainly cover the calibre of finisher that we need although with some funds gathering dust in the bank, there’s certainly the potential to break the bank.

With 13 league games left until we can find out with the transfer window opening, we’ll have to limp on until then.
