The media sniping at Newcastle isn`t anything new. In fact just hours after we secured promotion back to the top flight there were articles in some of the national newspapers having a pop at us.
There was even one article in The Express that spun the figures to make it look like we were one of the worst supported teams in that division last year! It was a very tenuous argument that rightly received a lot of criticism.
But of course it`s not just journalists stuck down in London that appear to want Newcastle to fail. Kevin Nolan has felt it necessary to come out with some fighting talk ahead of the new season aimed directly at ex-players and their criticism of the club.
While there aren`t many people connected to Newcastle that think this season will be easy, Nolan has slammed the critics who say Newcastle will be heading for a swift return to the Championship.
Nolan`s anger is aimed at ex-professionals who he claims ‘?were a bunch of nobodies.` No names were given but when you look across any media outlet there are plenty of people who fit the description Nolan gives.
Though with a dose of realism Nolan does admit that as a team Newcastle do have a lot to prove this season:
‘We had to prove a lot of people wrong in the Championship and we will have to prove them wrong again in the Premier League.`
There is no doubt that this season will be a hard one for us but you have to say Nolan makes a good point. There are plenty of ex-players who are making easy money as pundits. There are too many so called ‘experts` that are full of clichés and rarely make a good point based on any facts.
The sniping at Newcastle won`t stop. It`s par for the course these days and the media will be hoping for us to slip up once again.
Hopefully Hughton and the players will maintain the togetherness and spirit they showed last season and we`ll come through this season safely.
