A report in the Northern Echo has indicated that Newcastle United have made Rony Lopes their top target for the winter transfer window.

Steve Bruce has identified the attacking areas of his squad as needing to be strengthened, and he believes that Lopes, who currently plays for Sevilla, will be the man to add some attacking flair to his side.

The 23-year-old, who played five times for Manchester City, will cost around £18m.

The winger has struggled at Sevilla since joining from Monaco this summer only making one appearance and providing no goals as well as no assists.

Before this, he was in scintillating form for Monaco scoring 17 goals in the 2017/18 season, but the move to Spain has not worked, and he may be thinking about moving on.

Newcastle currently have Christian Atsu, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Matt Ritchie as the only recognised wingers in the squad – so they could do with some more depth out wide.

Lopes is still young and clearly has a talent, so a move to St James’ Park may be exactly what he needs to reignite his career.

  • Saying he’s struggled is a big stretch. He joined after La Liga started, after all the friendly games, and they have only played 3 matches since he’s joined. Considering Sevilla have signed 10+ players this summer, he’s just joined after the league started and Sevilla have only played 3 matches since then it’s way too early to say he’s struggling.
I wouldn’t say his move to Spain has not worked because he came on as a substitute in one of three matches he’s been a Sevilla player for, and didn’t score/assist in the 15 minutes he was on for.
I’m not sure how well he will do, but saying it hasn’t worked for him in Spain now is a very premature statement.
