A table of clearances and blocks made by all of the defenders outside of the so-called top six has revealed that it is Newcastle’s very own Federico Fernandez that is, in theory, the Premier League’s busiest and most effective defender.

In just 293 minutes of football, the Argentine has made three blocks, and 35 clearances – which combined adds up to 38.

This then works out as a staggering 11.67 defensive actions per game from the former Swansea man – with the next closest player only on 9.17.

Fernandez has also contributed a goal and an assist up the other end, and at the moment, he is in fine form for us.

An unfortunate injury suffered by Fabian Schar gave Fernandez the chance to shine, and he has not disappointed in any of his three starts so far, and this is reflected in the stats.

Three other Newcastle defenders also make it onto the board with around about 6.4 defensive actions per game.

Is Fernandez, currently, our best defender?

Yes, he has impressed

No, playing well but others are better

Ciaran Clark, Schar, and Jamaal Lascelles have all performed their defensive duties admirably this season – so it is no surprise to also see them high up on the table.

However, this is Fernandez’s moment, and what these stats show is that he relishes defending, and at the moment, he has to be considered our best defender.
