News: 25-year-old defender talks about rivalry

|

Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles believes the games between Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle have had an extra edge to them because of the 2017/18 season.

Both the Seagulls and the Magpies were promoted from the Championship, but Newcastle snatched the league off of Brighton on the final day.

Chris Hughton’s side took the lead but in the final minute a weak shot from Jack Grealish slipped through David Stockdale’s hands to ensure that Newcastle lifted the Championship trophy.

Lascelles feels that this has led to bitterness when the two sides meet, and he thinks that the game is more than just an ordinary Premier League fixture.

Newcastle have not actually beaten Brighton in the Premier League since the two sides were promoted but they could do with getting three points on Saturday at St James’ Park.

Both sides have had decent starts to the season but a win for either would be a massive boost.
