Newcastle’s ‘Keeper Search Continues

|

Despite currently having five goalkeepers on the books who could play in the first team, Newcastle are pursuing several options to bring in a new stopper to push Dubravka for the Number 1 spot.

Freddie Woodman will likely move to Port Vale on loan and Dan Langley will likely keep playing for the Under 23s, leaving Dubravka, Darlow, and Gillespie as the three keepers in the first-team squad. It’s likely Dubravka is going nowhere, which leaves room for movement for at least one of the other two.

As the season ended, Newcastle were heavily linked with a move for Manchester United ‘keeper, Dean Henderson, which some reports even claiming that talks had taken place on Tyneside. This story has recently flipped and a move is now extremely unlikely which has forced Newcastle to look elsewhere.

Portuguese International Diogo Costa is the latest name in the frame, however, A Bola (via Sports Witness) thinks this one will be out of reach for the Magpies as the 22-year-old is protected by a €60m release clause with his club, FC Porto expected to want at least €40m to kick off negotiations. It’s very unlikely that Howe and co would be willing to part with that much of their budget on a goalkeeper this season at least.

Another name often bandied around in the media is Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, with 90Min crediting Newcastle and Fulham with an interest in taking the German from Arsenal, who last season, lost his place to Aaron Ramsdale, however, Leno is said to be keen to fight for his place with the Gunners.
