Newcastle Were Led To Believe They Could Sign £60m Star In The Summer

|

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has recently shed some light on the transfer that never was when Newcastle pursued the signature of Leicester City’s James Maddison.

It was one of several transfer sagas that dragged on throughout the summer transfer window involving Newcastle as it transpired later that the Premier League’s other clubs’ promise of “anyone but Newcastle” was enforced throughout the window.

Newcastle initially approached Leicester with a £40m bid for James Maddison and were told that it would cost them £60m to sign their star midfielder. Negotiations seemed to carry on for weeks, with The Guardian reporting that the final bid made by Newcastle was around the £50m mark but ultimately Maddison remains a Leicester player to this day.

Leicester opened negotiations with Maddison to extend his stay at the King Power Stadium but it’s believed those talks have broken down leaving the door open for Newcastle to approach again in January.

Do We Go Back In For Maddison In January?

Definitely

No, move on.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Downie said that he felt that Leicester were never going to part with their key man: “I just felt Newcastle were led to believe they could have got him for a certain amount of money. But it wasn’t the case. It ended up being a little bit messy that one.”

Now with Leicester propping up the table and the club seeming to be in turmoil, it’s going to be hard for Brendan Rodgers (or whomever is in charge there after Christmas) to keep hold of the likes of Maddison and Tielemans who has also been linked with Newcastle.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We should absolutely pay whatever it takes to get James Maddison to Newcastle. He is everything we are missing – creative, quick, skilful and capable of finding the net from midfield.
