Newcastle United gaffer Chris Hughton has implied that with only a limited transfer kitty this season from owner Mike Ashley, Newcastle United would have to hope and pray that the side incapable of staying in the Premier League last season can magically become survivors next term.

It has been widely reported that Hughton would be given a laughable transfer kitty of £15 million with a wage-cap of £15,000 p/w on any single player.

All players bought by United in the Championship failed to cut-it in the Premier League – the likes of Mike Williamson, Wayne Routledge, and Danny Simpson just to name a few.

Hughton, who is a yes-man to owner Mike Ashley has since his appointment as full-time manager defended the billionaire branded as the head of the ‘Cockney Mafia’ by the Toon Army.

He said: ‘We are in more difficult times financially – most clubs are aware of that. We are no different. We have to be mindful to get the right value for anyone coming in. The outlook now is different to what it used to be.

‘This squad have earned the right to be in the Premier League. We are back on the basis of our performances this season.

‘It would have been difficult for this club if we had not gone up at the first attempt.

‘There are a group of teams who are fixtures in the Premier League. Then there are teams like Birmingham, who came up and have done very well, and Wolves, who have come into their own lately.

‘You can’t underestimate what we already have on the playing staff here. We have men with a great deal of experience in that league.’

Fans are urged therefore to gear up for a torrid campaign next season. Expectations should be lowered, and should be lower than low if the next campaign is to be enjoyed, or even endured.
