In a sensational turn of events, it has emerged that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is monitoring the situation of highly-rated French centre-back Sebastien Bassong, who plies his trade with Premiership side Newcastle United.

French-Cameroonian defender Bassong has been one of United’s most consistent performers of the season, and Wenger is said to have ear-marked the Frenchman as one of the players he wants at the Emirates next season.

The 22-year-old stopper does fit the profile of the players Arsenal usually seek-out – young, talented, French, but it is unlikely that the Toon will want to sell the player.

Sources also indicate that Newcastle United face competition from Arsenal on another French starlet – 19-year-old Mamadou Sakho from Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain.

A fee of £4 million has been touted, which both parties are eager to pay, although, Sakho may turn down both clubs to stay at PSG for at least another season, French sources confirm.
