Portuguese International Raul Meireles has emerged as the latest candidate to occupy the central midfield berth at Newcastle United, says The News of the World. The 25-year-old is a regular in the FC Porto starting eleven, and is thought to be the ideal man to replace Nicky Butt at the heart of the Magpies midfield.

Newcastle have been in search of a box-to-box midfielder for the past two seasons, and 175cm-tall Meireles has been identified by Dennis Wise and his team as the missing piece of the puzzle at St. James’ Park.

The central midfielder joined FC Porto from Boavista in 2003/2004, and has since established himself as one of the most consistent performers for the Portuguese club.

FC Porto are said to want £8 million for the highly-rated midfielder, and negotiations are currently on-going with the Magpies.
