It’s no secret that Newcastle are after a striker this window – and reports suggest that the club are ready to table an offer for Arsenal’s Alfie Matthews.

While the 18-year-old might not be what fans had in mind for strikers this January, the youngster is still highly rated in North London and it would be a big deal for the future.

Football Insider claims that discussions are underway between the two sides, with the Magpies supposedly ready to make an offer to the Gunners.

It is alleged that Matthews contract is set to expire in the summer, so that has opened the door for other clubs to take a look at him.

Newcastle look like the frontrunners – and they want him this month.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has played a total of 17 u18 Premier League games over the past two seasons, scoring two goals.

The youngster seems pretty versatile as well, with him being able to play behind the striker as well as lead the line.

He is yet to make an appearance in men’s football or at U23 level, so there is no doubt that there is a long way to go for the player if he is to make it.

Fans may be getting frustrated with the lack of movement so far in this window, and while this is unlikely to generate much excitement, it is nevertheless encouraging that they could be getting him to play for the black and white – especially after they managed to also get exciting prospect Reagan Thomson to the club.

For the first team, there have been lots of players linked but yet no action. It is claimed that a loan deal is not on the cards for Ademola Lookman and they must pay over £22m for the player. Elsewhere, it has been claimed by the Chronicle that Villareal’s Karl Toko Ekambi has been offered to United, but it will cost them around £23m.
