Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has came out and said that his side were not up for the game against Brighton.

Any Toon fan that put themselves through the despair of watching their side lose 3-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion for the second time in the season will have been well aware that the players were not up for the challenge, but to hear one of the senior professionals in the dressing room come out and say it, gives us an insight into the dysfunctional dressing room.

In an interview with the Press Association, the Republic of Ireland international said: “On Saturday night, we weren’t up for it as a group of players. For some reason, it didn’t work for us.”

The startling admission that the players weren’t up for it is not what we want to hear as fans. Steve Bruce and his coaching staff must take some of the blame as it is literally their job to ensure the players are ready to represent the football club.

However, on this occasion, the blame can not be left solely at the door of the Head Coach, any football player who fails to get themselves up for playing for Newcastle United should hang their head in shame.

He also went on to say: “The result was really disappointing. We knew ourselves as a group that was an opportunity there to pick up points and pull away a little bit, and we didn’t do that. Obviously, everyone was gutted after the game, and really frustrated.”

Clark has been one of the most reliable players for the Magpies in recent years and he has been a rare consistent performer this season, but this is yet more negative noises from the dressing room.

It does not seem that the dressing room is a very ‘United’ camp at the moment with constant murmurings of discontent and this is just another example.

Clark is one of the few players to be on international duty and he will be hoping to help Ireland in their bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
