Newcastle Should Not Make This South American Striker Their No 1 Target – Agree?

|

Shields Gazette journalist Ross Gregory is reporting that West Brom striker Salomon Rondon is our “No.1 Summer Target.”

The Chronicle are also saying that we are interested in signing the South American striker but they believe that Nice’s Alassane Plea is just as high a priority for the club.

Personally, I’m hoping that we focus our full attention on getting the deal for the Frenchman over the line. A compromise can certainly be reached between our initial £20m offer and the Ligue One side’s £27m asking price.

Rondon should only really be a backup in my opinion. The Venezuelan international is a decent target man, but we need to increase the number of goals we score, and the 28-year-old’s record in England is pretty average.

Just 28 goals in 120 appearances (an average of one in four games), isn’t particularly impressive. Of course, there are mitigating circumstances in that he was playing for a struggling team, but if we are going to break our transfer record, I would hope it would be for someone with a better return than that.

You could say at £16.5m it is not a great deal in today’s market, but I would much rather pay a bit more so we can get a more dynamic player like Plea who has pace and ability on the ball. What do you think? Should Rondon be a priority signing for us? Let me know in the poll.
