Newcastle United fans will no doubt all be worried about losing their star man Allan Saint-Maximin this summer, with the Frenchman likely to be on the shopping lists of many clubs in a better standing than ourselves.

Since arriving from Nice in the summer of 2019, Saint-Maximin has firmly established himself as a fans favourite as a result of his direct play, skill and incredible flair.

According to a report in the Daily Mail it would take considerably more than the reported £20M Newcastle paid two summers ago to prise him away from St. James’ Park, with £70M the amount that United would entertain the idea of selling for.

Newcastle rarely get much right these days but securing his signature for fewer than £20M has proved to be a cracking piece of business and the club are absolutely right not to want to cash in on their most prized asset.

Such a high price tag must surely reassure fans who had been left a bit on edge by some of Saint-Maximin’s comments made to TalkSPORT in which he referenced the lack of ambition at the club.

The price tag may be a fair bit to do with the fact that he recently committed to a six year deal at the club, meaning there isn’t any real pressure for us to sell.

The Magpies have been without their star man for a large chunk of the season just gone and it doesn’t take a genius to work out just how big of an impact he has on the side when fit.

His return to action has coincided with the upturn in form that saw United go from relegation certainties to a 12th place finish, 17 points ahead of Fulham in 18th.

He may not have been at his brilliant best in the 2-0 win over Fulham but Saint-Maximin is a truly special player and one that I hope to be able to watch live at St. James’ Park next season.
