Newcastle are at risk of forcing Elias Sorensen out of St James’ Park this summer, as the Chronicle understand the United hierarchy have instructed the Denmark U20 international to join our Under 23s for pre-season training.

Sorensen is a very highly-rated member of our academy despite his struggles on loan with Blackpool in the recent campaign, which saw United forced to issue a recall in March as he had played just 32 minutes for the Seasiders.

It was a different story whenever he took to the field for the Magpies second-string, as the 6 ft 2 19-year-old found the net 12 times in 17 Premier League 2 games, and struck four in five EFL Trophy fixtures last season as we reached the Premier League Cup and PL2 Play-Off Finals.

He had hoped his strike rate with the academy would ensure that the 2019/20 season was the one where he finally gets his shot with the first-team, but that does not seem to be possible right now.

The Chronicle understand club chiefs have informed Sorensen that if he wants his shot with the first-team, he has to show he can deliver once more with the Under 23s in pre-season, even though we currently only boast Dwight Gayle, Yoshinori Muto and Joselu as our recognised senior options, and Joselu is widely thought to be on his way out.

United chiefs have also made the decision to, at least temporarily, promote Thomas Allan, Mo Sangare and Nathan Harker to the first-team for training at Darsley Park. Sorensen could see these signs as warnings that the first-team will not be on offer to him at any point this season, and may look to secure a move away from Tyneside.

He did suggest that he would be open to going back out on loan earlier in the year amid sharing his hopes of a first-team chance at St James’ Park, so the end of his Newcastle journey may not be entirely over, yet.
