Newcastle United have again been linked to the signature of Celtic’s Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer.
United are not the only club that are said to have an interest in the 23-year old defender with Premier League newcomers Norwich City and Italian giants AC Milan also keeping on eye on the situation.
The report comes from the Daily Mail and it is also reported that the defender is keen on a move eye from Celtic Park this summer.
The main reason for our interest is most likely to be the fact that he is out of contract at the end of next season, meaning Celtic could miss out on getting a transfer fee if he was to run down his current deal.
The Glasgow club value him to be worth somewhere in the region of £25M, which would surely be the first sign that any sort of a deal would not be happening with Newcastle.
The situation with the covid-19 pandemic will stop United from spending anywhere near that much on a single player unless the Saudi led takeover deal is passed through at long last but with no end in sight on that matter, we have to be prepared that we will be shopping in the bargain basement this summer.
And with his contract situation and a desire to depart Celtic, Ajer may well just fit into that category. The magpies have been boosted with an unlikely windfall after Norwich City and Watford sealed their automatic promotion to the top flight at the first time of asking and that could go a long way to getting someone like Ajer over the line.
The eagerness from the player to find a new club may have something to do with pressure from his national team manager to find a new club due to the lack of a challenge in Scottish football.
