Newcastle Player In The Running For Player Of The Month

|

It is becoming a regular occurrence these days that at least one Newcastle player will be in the running for the EA Sports Player Of The Month, and January is no exception.

This month’s contender is none other than local lad, Dan Burn.

Dan Burn has been an integral part of that rock solid defence this season and he appears to only be getting better. Signed from Brighton last January for £13m, Burn became an instant hit on Tyneside, giving his all in every game as a no nonsense centre back.

This season he has found himself playing at left-back after doing a superb job covering for Matt Targett. He has made the position his own and when fit again, Targett faces a huge challenge to win his spot back.

January saw Burn score his first goal for his boyhood club in the Carabao Cup clash against Leicester, cutting in from the left hand side to place a superb finish in the far corner. That goal, however, doesn’t factor into the Player Of The Month reckoning as it wasn’t a league goal. However, four out of four clean sheets certainly does.

There is tough competition for this month’s prize however, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka having an excellent month. However, despite my vote being cast for Dan Burn, my money is on Marcus Rashford. Rashford has found his goalscoring touch again at Manchester United and has scored some brilliant individual goals. Plus, you know what pundits are like when it comes to Manchester United.

Other players in the running are David Raya of Brentford, Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest, Solly March of Brighton and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

The Vital Football Podcast was live on Tuesday night, see my reactions to Joelinton’s disallowed goal at Southampton as it happened and watch as our resident Evertonian struggles to come to terms with what’s going on at Goodison Park.
