Newcastle player could be set to join rivals – report

|

Newcastle goalkeeper Nathan Harker has been told he will not have his contract renewed next season – and he could now subsequently be joining their local rivals.

The Sunderland Echo has confirmed the interest in the 21-year-old after he started for the club’s U23s in their 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League Cup last night.

Allegedly, the Newcastle player had a fine performance as Sunderland nicked a late victory, leaving U23 coach Elliot Dickman impressed.

Speaking to the Echo, Dickman said: “The keeper, Nathan, has made a couple of good saves.

“He’s been training with us for a couple of days and he was smashing tonight. Hopefully he’ll play again next Monday and he does as well.

“He’s still at Newcastle, but he’s allowed to visit and trial at other clubs”.

Dickman went onto add that if Harker does eventually ending up signing on at the club, he would be joining the U23s initially rather than with the first-team squad.

The youngster is set to feature again for the team on Wearside as they play Wigan Athletic on Monday – and the coach confirmed that a decision will be made on whether the club will take him on in the next week or so.

Would you like to see Harker succeed at the Stadium of Light?

No, I hope he makes them worse

Yes - and then hopefully he can get a better move

With Harker not looking likely to trouble Dubravka any time soon, this is hardly going to be a loss which is felt by the club at senior level.

Even with the fierce rivalry, fans cannot begrudge the individual for trying his hand at Sunderland and should wish him the best with his future career.

Overall, he managed to notch up a fair few games for the club, just not at senior level.

He played 31 Premier League 2 matches, keeping nine clean sheets, as well as seven EFL Trophy games, keeping one clean sheet.

At 21, the player is simply deemed to far away from the first-team at too late of an age. It’s a shame that no other club is looking at him right now as seriously as Sunderland, but as a Magpie junior for much of his life, he should be wished all the best at wherever his career takes him.
