The Daily Mail has claimed the club have said thanks but no thanks having been offered the chance to sign Dimitar Berbatov.

Newcastle had reportedly been offered former Tottenham, Manchester United and Fulham striker Berbatov but the Magpies declined the opportunity to sign the free agent.

Veteran striker Berbatov has been looking for a new club since leaving Monaco but has so far failed to find any takers with these claims buried deep in the Mail report that has speculated Newcastle are exploring a potential deal to bring Andros Townsend back to St James’ Park.

Townsend – who enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Newcastle last season despite our relegation – hasn’t managed to hold down a regular first team place under former Magpies boss’ Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace since joining them in the summer with this return mooted.

Rafa Benitez will apparently ‘check to see if all parties are receptive to a deal’ and could then make his move for the 25 year old this month. A Townsend return to Newcastle is nonsense in my mind though with a Sam Clucas arrival – with interest also claimed in that Mail report -more likely.

But even his departure from the KCOM Stadium to link up with former teammate Mo Diame at Newcastle isn’t that likely as Clucas isn’t a player Hull are willing to sell due to a growing injury list and the battle they are fighting against to stay in the Premier League.
