With Jonjo Shelvey just coming off a season where his performances should have been rewarded with a trip to the Russian World Cup, it would come as no surprise if there was a list of likely suitors to attain his signature in this transfer window.

As it is, there are other members of the Newcastle midfield that are seemingly more likely to be wearing the attire of opposition clubs when the new season starts in August.

One of these, Jack Colback, has been out on loan at Nottingham Forest in the last season before his spell ended with nothing really being said. Over the past few days though, reports have emerged that have Forest interested in buying although it’s stated that they have other teams to contend with for the 28-year-old.

With Rafa Benitez making Colback train with the under 23’s last Summer, it’s odds on that the same thing will happen again this time around if Colback doesn’t move on.

Another player linked with a move away in what has seemed a surprise is Mikel Merino. Merino only joined permanently last Autumn when his loan had a clause activated but he did so with some great cameos that saw a lot of us claim that he had potential to be a world star.

It leaves a question mark over what has happened behind the scenes if Merino does leave with the rumoured transfer fee of around £10m being well short of what his potential looked like it could value him at.

  • If its true about Merino and ONLY if it’s true then we really do not want players like him at the club; why? its only a few weeks ago after similar speculation that the player himself came out and CLEARLY stated that he wanted to stay and compete for his place! Now this further speculation. Of course, the problem with all of this is the pure speculative nature of the sporting press, nothing short of gutter journalism, making suggestions to sell papers when there is no foundation in the story. Watch this space for Merino to be part of our squad come August.
