Newcastle Looking To Avoid “Tax”

|

Newcastle United has the honour of being labeled the “richest club in football”, which, while technically accurate, paints a picture that the club has access to the PIF’s £200bn+ bank account, which is simply not true. PIF is the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and as such is there for all aspects of Saudi infrastructure and business, as well as for the people of Saudi.

However, that hasn’t stopped clubs from seemingly adding a “Newcastle Tax” to transfers, with Lille allegedly jumping on that bandwagon and suddenly asking for £36m for Sven Botman despite there being a previous agreement in place for a £30m transfer. It is believed Newcastle already offered more than AC Milan, however, talks have taken place between Botman and the Italian Champions despite this.

Luke Edwards of the Telegraph took to Twitter to confirm that Newcastle’s owners are standing firm and not bowing down to Lille’s demands for the extra money and are willing to walk away from the deal.

If the club were to walk away from the deal for their top target, it sets a fantastic precedent going forward and sends a message to the world of football that Newcastle will not be bullied into paying over the odds for players just because of their perceived wealth. If Newcastle were to capitulate and give in to Lille’s demands that would open the door for other clubs to do the same, so it is great to see the club standing firm right out of the gate.

It might mean we miss out on some targets, but if it means we aren’t dealing with clubs using underhanded tactics and weeding out players who are only interested in money, so be it. If a player truly wants to sign for the Magpies, you’d like to think they will make it known to their parent club and a deal will be reached.
