Newcastle interest in 9-goal prospect unlikely to appeal despite skilful technique – opinion

|

We still have no manager in place for next season, but the Newcastle transfer department appear to have been busy, as TEAMtalk understand we have made contact with Juventus regarding their skilful U23s striker Stephy Mavididi.

The Derby-born striker joined the Old Lady from Arsenal’s youth set-up last summer for £1.8million, and has continued to impress in the Italian third-division to the point he made his Serie A debut as a second-half substitute against SPAL in April.

With the fierce competition for places at the Allianz Stadium, though, chances for Mavididi to stamp his mark in Turin next term remain unlikely, and that is where TEAMtalk understand we fit in.

They claim we, along with Everton, Leeds, Southampton, Burnley, Aston Villa, Derby, Fulham and Middlesbrough, have contacted the Italian giants to see if they would allow Mavididi to leave on loan over the summer in order to further develop his budding career.

In the 2018/19 season, the Derby-born striker found the net on seven occasions and assisted another, while Mavididi left the Premier League 2 with a parting goal before moving to Turin in August.

It would be unlikely, though, that his arrival would appeal to the St James’ Park faithful, as the 21-year-old is still finding his way in the game, and would be nothing more than a squad option on Tyneside capable of coming off the bench to occupy one of the three forward positions.

The Arsenal product, who represented England from U17 to Under 20 level, has also enjoyed torrid experiences while on loan in the Championship. His spell with Preston North End at the start of the 2017/18 term returned eleven appearances without a goal, before 20 appearances with Charlton Athletic saw Mavididi net twice.
