Reports state that Newcastle United may be looking to Wearside for one of their summer transfer window additions.

The player in question is Dion Sanderson who the Chronicle report has been the purpose behind United’s scouting mission in Sunderland.

Sanderson, 21, does not belong to Sunderland and he is currently enjoying a stint on loan at the Stadium of light from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The young defender has just one season left on his contract at Molineux which would mean he is likely to be part of United’s tight transfer budget plans.

However, they may not be alone in hunting Sanderson’s signature as other Premier League clubs have also registered an interest in the 21-year old.

His performances for Sunderland in the third tier of English football have contributed to the interest in Sanderson and his current manager Lee Johnson went as far to call him a ‘Rolls Royce defender’, a term that is usually saved for the likes of Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk.

It wouldn’t be the first time that the Magpies have signed an ex-Sunderland player with Jack Colback, DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo all joining United after a sentence on the dark side.

In an ideal world, Nick de Marco and co do the business and win arbitration against the Premier League, clearing the road for the Saudi-led takeover to happen at long last but we have to be realistic and know that the likely hood is we will be shopping around for bargains in our summer recruitment and Sanderson certainly fits that bill.

He is yet to play at the top level but did have a spell with Cardiff City in the Championship prior to taking the drop down to Sunderland in a bid to get more games under his belt so it seems unlikely that he would come straight in and make a difference.

I guess a positive would be potentially upsetting a few Sunderland fans but links like this will hardly get the pulses racing of Toon fans.
