Newcastle fans have finally been handed some good January news

|

It’s been a poor January for Newcastle so far. Not only have the results been poor, but our lack of transfer action has also been really disappointing, as it’s clear that we need to improve the team at Rafael Benitez’s disposal.

Still, at least we haven’t had any major departures, and fortunately, there’s one crucial player that won’t be leaving the club this month, it seems – which, at last, is some great news for us.

Rafael Benitez has confirmed, according to the Chronicle Live, that Jonjo Shelvey won’t be leaving the club in January, with the midfielder seemingly set to remain at St James’ Park for the time being, at least.

The Evening Standard had previously reported potential interest from West Ham in the midfielder, but this defiant rejection of the idea that Shelvey is leaving Newcastle suggests that the Hammers should look elsewhere.

No matter your opinion of Shelvey, there’s no denying that he’s one of Newcastle’s best players. He’s got so much technical ability and poise on the ball, and we’ve seriously lacked creativity whenever he hasn’t played this season.

Losing him at this point in the season would, in many ways, be a big step backwards, and that’s the last thing an already-struggling Rafael Benitez needs right now.

The manager appears confident that an exit won’t happen, and whilst we clearly can’t rule anything out, you’d think that selling the Englishman would be too much even for Mike Ashley.

Now, we’re just hoping for one or two new faces in addition to the retention of a familiar face.
