Newcastle United face Premier League competition in the race to sign Everton outcast James McCarthy, as Crystal Palace are looking like a potential destination for the midfielder, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

The Sun, via TEAMtalk’s paper talk, had claimed earlier in the week that the Eagles are vying to beat us to the punch and land the Republic of Ireland international, having already seen one approach to the Toffees rejected.

Roy Hodgson’s South London outfit allegedly offered Everton £8million in July to facilitate a transfer for the rarely-seen midfielder, who has now entered the final year of his £50,000-a-week contract on Merseyside.

The Blues were reluctant to accept the figure presented though, despite boss Marco Silva pushing for McCarthy to secure a move away after deeming the 28-year-old surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

New Toon boss Steve Bruce is keen to see Newcastle chiefs pursue a move for the 41-cap international though, as he feels we are short in midfield, but United executives are reticent to the idea of the potential transfer and have so far only considered lowballing Everton in negotiations.

Reports have suggested the Magpies board are contemplating a £5million offer for the injury-plagued midfielder, but could look to include any of our fringe options in a potential deal.

However, the people in charge of our transfer activity alongside Managing Director Lee Charnley are far from enthusiastic about striking an agreement, which meets the mood of the fanbase who see McCarthy as a ‘really uninspiring’ target.

Due to his frequent injuries and Silva’s preferred midfield options, McCarthy made just one Premier League appearance last season – consisting of a 14 minute run out in April.

  • There is no “ board “ at Newcastle. Have you no knowledge at all of how this basket case of a club is run ?
Quite simply it’s fatAsh telling charmless chumley to agree on one decent signing , pick up the dog ends, sorry free transfer men, then put up the usual charade , supported by the plonkers in the press and particularly the odious Sky brown nosers, to look as though they are trying to sign half decent players. But really we have seen this many times before. Charmless chumley will he quoted by Sky lapdogs as just failing to get the deals over the line. Constant lowball and demeaning offers will always result in failure. Just as fatAsh wants. This card has been played repeatedly over the last innumerable years. And clowns like this site just do what fatAsh wants…all because you fail to do a modicum of research.
