Newcastle face growing competition for £60k-a/w ace, as Benitez future threatens deal – report

|

Newcastle face growing competition for the signature of on-loan striker Salomon Rondon, as Rafa Benitez’s uncertain future at St James’ Park is thought to be threatening the Magpies’ chances of striking a deal, according to the Daily Mail.

The daily newspaper also claim Premier League high-flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers are now making moves to sign the Venezuelan, and have reached out to West Bromwich Albion to see how much they value the £60,000-a-week forward, who is also attracting interest from clubs in Spain and Italy.

It has been known for some time that the striker has a £16.5million release clause in his contract at the Hawthorns, and that price is now locked in after the Baggies’ Play-Off Semi-Final defeat to Aston Villa ensured the Midlands outfit could not be promoted this season.

Wolves are considered to be an attractive proposition from Rondon after their seventh-placed finish, and could have a slot in their squad for the 29-year-old as they are looking to bolster Nuno Espirito Santo’s options in order to push on next season and bring in competition for Raul Jimenez.

We, on the other hand, are still yet to make a formal offer to West Brom for Rondon, despite Benitez’s hopes of keeping the 6 ft 1 attacker at United after he scored twelve goals across all competitions for the club while on loan.

A decision on whether we move or not will not be made until the Spanish head coach’s future is decided, though, and any move for Rondon will not include Dwight Gayle.

United are said to have offered the English striker to West Brom following his loan spell at the club, but the Championship outfit would prefer that any deal for Gayle or Rondon is treated separately to the other.
