Newcastle dealt transfer blow as competition heats up for target – Report

|

Newcastle United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit for Jarrod Bowen as news has emerged that Bournemouth will be rivalling them for his signature.

The Magpies have long been touted for the signing of the winger and now it seems his strong form has made other Premier League clubs stand up and notice.

According to 90MiN, Bournemouth are the latest club to have shown a serious interest in the winger, and given that they have established themselves in the Premier League over a number of years then they could be seriously fierce opposition to the club.

Additionally, there is now more pressure to make this deal happen as one of their best players this season – also a winger in Allan Saint-Maximin – has been ruled out for potentially “weeks” with a hamstring injury, according to Steve Bruce.

Given that the top goalscorers this season are a central midfielder and three defenders, it’s pretty evident that the Magpies need some more firepower in their attacking positions, especially in Saint-Maximin’s absence. Jonjo Shelvey currently tops the chart with five goals, while Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez and Jetro Williams all have two apiece. Furthermore, only Norwich, Crystal Palace and Watford have fewer goals than them in the Premier League thus far.

Would you take Jarrod Bowen over any of our front three?

Yes, he is scoring goals consistently

No, he is not proven at a higher level

If goals are what they are after, then Jarrod Bowen seems a pretty a good place to start. Still only 22, he has been clearly the standout player for Hull this season, as his 14 goals from 21 appearances show – a remarkable feat for a player who has played 14 games starting at right midfield. It’s no blip, either. The forward has managed 51 goals in 108 Championship games, so there’s no surprise to see that there are clubs lining up for his admired left peg.

Newcastle need to make sure that they do everything they can to draw him to the club. The squad is clearly missing someone who is a great finisher. In their current 5-4-1 system, it is clear that the midfielders are the main goal threat, as proven by Shelvey, Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron all having the highest shots per game. Just imagine how much more of a threat they would be if they had a really accomplished finisher in one of those wider roles.
