Newcastle could face competition for £13.5m rated winger – report

|

Despite having no manager, Newcastle could still be interested in signing Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, according to a report in The Burnley Express.

The article suggests The Magpies could face tough competition to sign the 19-year-old, with Everton, Arsenal and Premier League champions Manchester City all interested.

The England U20 international scored three goals and provided five assists in his 21 league games last season as he helped Burnley to a 15th place finish. The midfielder, who is valued at £13.5million by website Transfermarkt, started his career in the Manchester United academy before making a move to Turf Moor.

Newcastle have not made any signings so far this summer, and some fans may have thought that would be the case until Rafa Benitez’s replacement is installed. They may not be the case, Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones claimed in a Tweet that he understands the next boss at St James’ Park will have very little control over transfers.

If that is the case, McNeil may be seen as an investment. He is young and British, which means if he can impress on Tyneside he could turn a profit for the Newcastle hierarchy. According to The Daily Mail, Burnley manager Sean Dyche has been tipped for the Newcastle manager job, which could make any potential transfer easier.
