Newcastle United have agreed a fee to sign highly-rated 23-year-old right-back Danny Simpson from Manchester United, it has emerged.

The defender is set to undergo a medical today, and will be unveiled as a permananent signing later on the day.

Simpson will be Chris Hughton’s first cash signing of his United managerial career, and is expected to be followed by bids for Nottingham Forest midfielder James Perch and Portsmouth defender Mike Williamson.

The Red Devils defender is said to have cost the Magpies £750,000 and will pen a two-and-a-half year deal at St James’ Park.
