Shola Ameobi and Albert Luque will face Villarreal in Saturday’s St James’ Park friendly, but Roeder doesn’t need us to tell him his options are paper thin.

Roeder: ‘Having just two strikers leaves us woefully short. Most Premiership managers have four strikers in their squad to select from but we have to be patient.

‘There is still the best part of three weeks until the transfer window closes and it’s still possible we could get a couple of players in. We are working hard to identify the players we want.’

So what about Empoli’s Francesco Tavano and Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt?
Newcastle scout David Mills will be at the Amsterdam tournament this weekend checking out Kuyt again, but Roeder ruled out any move for Tevano.

Roeder: ‘It’s not true, we’re not even aware of the player.’

Shepherd: ‘Glenn is not going to get anyone that won’t suit Newcastle. This is Newcastle. We’re never boring, so let’s see what happens.’
