Australian defender Craig Moore has become the unlikely Newcastle United hero of the World Cup.

And the good news for Glenn Roeder is that he back-tracked late last season and said he WOULD be back at Newcastle for the new season. The player was signed by Graeme Souness, but said last Christmas he saw his future back in Australia.

Moore and Australia were a surprise package in Germany, and only went out when Italy scored a late controversial penalty. But he will not be back on Tyneside training with his team-mates this week. Roeder has granted him leave so he can go on holiday with his family.

Moore: ‘I am looking forward to going back to Newcastle next season, and if I have an out-of-this-world time it’s possible I might be able to extend my contract. But I can see myself returning to Australia in 2007 and going to live on the Gold Coast.

‘I’m not out to prove anything to anybody at Newcastle. I know what I offer the team – and I know that if I’m fit I should be playing.’
