There have been a lot of rightful complaints about Mike Ashley during his time as the owner of Newcastle. He’s stripped back funds, he’s displayed an obvious lack of love for the club, and time and time again he’s fallen well below expectations.
However, according to the Chronicle, he’s finally done something right.
Significantly, formal discussions are yet to take place, but this is still good news for the Magpies.
Of course, it’s vitally important that Benitez remains at the club. He’s one of Europe’s best managers, and his tactical ability has been on display all season long.
If Ashley wants Benitez to remain, that does imply that he’s willing to open his pockets somewhat – at least because the Spaniard will demand a significant salary – and so this is a big step.
It’s also good to hear that this news is coming now, rather than in April or May. The club appear to be eager to move at least somewhat more quickly than they have in the past.
Let’s just hope that they agree to give Benitez what he demands and that a deal is wrapped up quickly. We can’t afford to lose Rafa.
