Hot on the heels of one of our injured players stepping up his training in preparation of a return comes news of another.

This week we reported on Paul Dummett getting closer to full fitness and staking a claim on the left back slot and today saw a twitter video released of Mikel Merino running around with a ball.

Merino has been missing for a couple of weeks with an injury he picked up in his back and when pressed on the matter in a press conference recently, Rafa Benitez said that Merino could be out for anything from two weeks to over a month.

With the minimum time passing in which Merino was said to be out, it’s not clear if he is fit to make the squad for Saturday’s game at Man United as it was shot in Spain but it would be typical Rafa if he was involved somehow to upset any tactical work done on us.

Merino, for many of us, has been a brilliant signing as he can change a game or passage of play with his excellent vision and weight of pass. His presence in the side has been a miss.

If as expected he does miss the weekend game then he may be in line for a return next weekend at home to Watford.
