The possible takeover of Newcastle still looks to have a strong chance of happening but it now seems to be a waiting game to see what developments emerge over the comings days and weeks.

The good news is that a number of journalists remain confident, with The Athletic’s Chris Waugh suggesting earlier this week that there has never been a more realistic chance of the club changing hands.

That view is shared by The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas, who has outlined all the players involved as well as all the details that may have been previously overlooked.

He does still hold reservations, however, naturally so given a number of groups have registered interest in the Magpies only to fall away, with recent examples including the Bin Zayed Group as well as Peter Kenyon.

One of the reasons for Douglas’ doubt could be the presence of Amanda Staveley in the consortium, as she previously looked to buy the club when Rafa Benitez was coming to the end of his time in the north-east.

This time around, her company PCP Capital is expected to take a 10% stake if a purchase occurs, and the fact she seems to have sought investment elsewhere is surely a positive.

Not only does it hint that she is a more serious candidate this time around, but that the club will be in a stronger position if a takeover occurs this time around, as we will have more financial muscle due to the involvement of PIF and the Reuben Brothers.

However, until we get more concrete developments – such as an update from a Newcastle representative – then it is likely Douglas and co. will continue to feel apprehensive, as many of us currently do.
