‘Magic’, ‘Wow’ – Some Newcastle fans give their verdict on South American’s performance

Lionel Messi’s penalty rescued a vital point for Argentina as they struggled in draw with Paraguay at the Copa America, but it was Miguel Almiron’s performance that got Newcastle fans excited on social media.

The 25-year-old midfielder went down the left wing on a brilliant run and his cross set up Richard Sanchez to put Paraguay in the lead. It was his second assist of the tournament following his fantastic pass against Qatar in his first game.

The final games in Group B take place on Sunday when Colombia face Paraguay and Qatar play Argentina, which will give the Newcastle supporters another chance to see their man play.

Almiron joined Newcastle in January from MLS side Atalanta United for £21million, but he only made 10 appearances for the Magpies due to a season-ending injury suffered in the win against Southampton in early April. However, his contribution was telling because they won five and drew two of those matches.

His form in the Copa America could be vital for Newcastle if he is able to replicate it in the Premier League next season. The club appears to have put a hold on player recruitment until after the proposed takeover is finalised.

Here’s what fans said about Almiron’s performance on Twitter…
