With a tan that compares creosote for creosote with David Dickenson, South Shields born and known mackem Phil Brown has gone on record to state his delight about facing the team of the supporters who have him a kicking years hence. Having already guided Hull to a 2-1 win at SJP earlier in season and a flying start the odds are stacked in the Tiger`s favour. Brown said:

“We wanted a home draw – you always do in the FA Cup, no matter which round it is – and I was happy when Hull City came out of the hat first. And then all of a sudden a Premier League club, a big scalp, comes out as well. I still class Newcastle United as a top-six team in the Premier League.

Although they`re not there at the moment, I am convinced Joe Kinnear will get it right, and they will end up in the top half of the league. But it`s funny because the boot`s on the other foot. Hull City are a big scalp now. We`re a top six side at the moment and, for me, it`s going to be an interesting tie, and it`s certainly one I`m looking forward to.

However, it will be interesting to see how Joe approaches it. I`ll still be using the full squad, there`s no doubt about it, but it`s a one-off and I will be going into it expecting to win it.

We`ve got five games between now and then, and those five games could decide where we`re going to finish in the Premier League. Everybody`s given us a lot of plaudits. Now we`ve drawn three games on the bounce. We`ve now got 23 points from 15 games, and the next four or five games are going to be crucial. But home to Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup will be a full house, like every game this season. It`ll be a cracking atmosphere.”
