I think the majority of Toon fans knew within two weeks of Albert Luque’s arrival in the team that the Spaniard was never going to cut it in the Premiership. His body language said it all. When he constantly tumbled after the slightest of touches by opposing defenders we knew we were going to have problems.

As Jackie Milburn famously said: ‘the foreigners struggle here, and just wait ’til they have to play in the clarts!’

I certainly wouldn’t say that about all foreigners we’ve had, obviously. For example on Saturday I thought Emre was as passionate as any player on the field. OK, he probably wears more clothes than Paddington Bear, but he gets stuck in.

Luque was almost in tears when he was overlooked for Newcastle’s Carling Cup tie against Watford, or so he says. He certainly seems more passionate OFF the field than he is ON it.

Luque: ‘My situation is now desperate. It is incredible that I was not picked for Watford.

‘The final decision is with the coach and, if he is not interested in me, the best solution is for me to go, probably in the winter market. I’m very unhappy here.’

As if we didn’t know that already. But despite rumours of Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia all supposedly interested in signing him, Roeder has admitted there has not been one single knock on his door asking about his availability. Not from Barcelona … Bayern Munich … Barnsley … or Bogna Regis.
