Some of the latest Newcastle United transfer news sees the Chronicle report that the club have already drawn up a shortlist of targets.

Most of the (relative) success enjoyed this season is surely down to how decisive Newcastle United were in one week of the transfer window just gone. Indeed, over the course of just two days in September, the club significantly strengthened by signing Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis and, aside from Fraser’s injuries problems, all three have made a marked impact since arriving.

So, it’s at least somewhat promising to see the club making plans ahead of the January window if they are prepared to bring in more players.

Obviously, it’s fairly logical to do that but, as we all know, Newcastle rarely make logical decisions, particularly in the New Year sales.

Who can forget that move for Seydou Doumbia?

Clearly, there’s no indication as to who may be targeted for a move but at least those behind the scenes aren’t letting lingering takeover talk get in the way ahead of what could be a crucial month. The team may look safe now but this Premier League season has thrown up all kinds of surprises and the Magpies have certainly proven they can go on poor runs.

With that in mind, January represents a chance to safe-guard against any niggling relegation battle. The bottom three may seem a distance away but Fulham and Burnley have shown signs of recovery and, if Newcastle are ever going to be taken over, surely they need to be in the Premier League.
