Thankfully for Newcastle United, it looks as if top scorer Callum Wilson will be available in some capacity this weekend.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak that shut the training ground until Wednesday after the game with Aston Villa was called off, it’s not been clear as to who could be selected by manager Steve Bruce for the visit of West Brom on Saturday afternoon.

Wilson took to Instagram (relayed by @NUFC360 on Twitter) to post a photo of himself training, however, in what could be a major boost for the Magpies.

The club’s top scorer this season, his seven goals in nine games have proven invaluable to their cause and – as he proved against Crystal Palace – the £20m man can decide tight games with a moment of quality.

Indeed, given the less than ideal preparations, it’s not hard to imagine Newcastle being dragged into a scrap by the Baggies, with any hope of a walk in the park against one of the league’s strugglers surely out of the question now considering the outbreak.

Is Callum Wilson the best striker since Alan Shearer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

With that in mind, having the club’s only realistic source of goals available to capitalise should be a major help. A win on Saturday would take the Toon to 17 points already, just under half way to the 40 point mark often associated with staying in the division, so certainly would help allay any fears of being dragged into the mire.

Barely the most ambitious thing to say in the world but, given what we saw against Chelsea and Southampton, it’s a relative comfort.

Bring him home: The transfer Newcastle United shouldn’t miss out on this January. Read about it here…
