According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are keen on ensuring Miguel Almiron is back in training by early next week following his suspension on international duty.

The Paraguayan was booked late on during his country’s drawn World Cup Qualifier with Lionel Messi’s Argentina and will therefore miss their game with Bolivia on Tuesday evening.

Obviously, getting Almiron back earlier has to be viewed as a good thing. While it has been a difficult season for the former Atlanta star, he is capable of playing either centrally or out wide amid some injury problems for the Toon Army. Indeed, Jonjo Shelvey is still out of action and Jeff Hendrick was recently caught up in a coronavirus related scare.

With Chelsea up next and likely to dominate possession, the 26-year-old’s pace does represent a useful counter-attacking tool. Almiron is one of few Toon players regularly registering a progressive run (1.07) who are available for the visit of the Blues while he also impressed in a more central role against Wolves recently.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp were amongst the managers to fume at the congested fixture schedule recently and, while Almiron will not play for his country, allowing him to fly back from South America and rest ahead of Newcastle’s next fixture is surely beneficial to leaving it until later.
