Within The Athletic‘s update in regards to Callum Wilson’s injury, they do reveal some interesting news in regards to another Newcastle United striker.

With the latest news on Wilson’s injury as good as it can be given he’s not expected to need surgery, they reveal Dwight Gayle is making ‘positive progress’ on the knee injury that has ruled him out of action since the Magpies’ pre-season training camp in York.

Suffering an MCL injury, Gayle is yet to play this season. While he may not be of the required level to lead a line in the same manner Wilson is considering their differing Premier League records, a return would invariably make the Toon’s options stronger in front of goal.

Four goals and two assists last season saw him contribute to six league goals, the third-most in Newcastle’s squad. With no one this season outside of Wilson contributing more than two, Gayle could be a useful option.

Who would you rather have up front?

His 1.2 shots per game average last season (via WhoScored) would see him rank third this year so there’s every chance Gayle could add to the firepower. Given the fact Joelinton and Andy Carroll have combined for two goals in little over a season together, it’s much-needed.

As an alternative, Gayle is much more of a force in front of goal. Perhaps he could offer a foil for Wilson too, or at least afford him some reprieve. Last season proved that he can be an impactful option from the bench.

Though there’s still progress to be made, things could be looking good for Newcastle.
