With a possible suspension hanging over his head Kevin Keegan has admitted that he might look to rest Nicky Butt for the remaining fixtures this season: ‘I will have a chat with Nicky about it all, but my feeling is that he is a vital player for us,’ Keegan told the media. ‘Nicky is always the sort of player who is going to get booked because he is so competitive and he goes in there and tries to win challenges. He has got to handle that.

‘When you are doing as many as he does over 90-odd minutes, you are going to mis-time some.’

Butt has picked up 14 yellow cards this season so if he picks up a 15th in either of the final two Premier League matches with Chelsea or Everton, which is a strong possibility, he will be handed a three-match suspension, which would carry over into next season.

Would Keegan be right to rest Butt, or should he play him regardless?
