After his shock return to St James’ earlier in the year it has been quite a hectic time for Kevin Keegan, with him now admitting that he is looking forward to the chance to take a bit of a breather before taking stock and launching his assault on the Premier League with the Toon next season: ‘I was thrown in a little bit at the deep end when I took the job, so I’m ready for a break, to be honest with you,’ Keegan told the Gazette. ‘But had the last six or seven games been at the start of the season, we’d have been up at the top of the Premier League and looking forward to trying to stay there.’

There is no such luxury for many of his players though with many taking part in various internationals for their countries over the summer, with a few also taking part in the European Championships, he added: ‘Lots of things are going to happen before we get back here on July 7.

‘But my focus now is trying to win these last two football games we have and then trying to get three or four players in that can give us all a reason to come back with even more optimism than we have at the moment.’

Can Keegan come back refreshed after this rest to start moving the Toon forward as he plans?
