Speaking to This is Futbol, Chris Kirkland has revealed he believes it would be ‘absurd’ for Mauricio Pochettino to move to Newcastle United should a Saudi Arabian takeover be approved.

The Argentine was strongly linked with the Magpies had they been taken over after he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur as a big-name replacement for Steve Bruce. Obviously, that never happened but the thought of such a highly-rated manager arriving on Tyneside certainly would be exciting for fans.

When asked about whether or not Bruce could improve the side should the current regime afford him more money, the former Liverpool goalkeeper said: ‘ Whether that’ll happen or not, you know, they don’t spend much money, do they, Newcastle.’

‘Until they get taken over, but then there’s the talk if they get taken over, will they sack him and get a Pochettino in or get somebody else in, which is absurd for me. But nothing should surprise you in football.”

Given where Newcastle are at the moment, it would invariably be a step down considering the former Southampton coach has been linked with Manchester United too. Still, the Magpies would have offered a unique sporting project had wealthy new owners arrived as well as an awful lot of money.

The idea of it is absurd on the face of it but that somewhat speaks to the level of ambition the club could have operated under. Backed by the Saudi state, the club could afford to at least attempt to try and bring one of Europe’s leading coaches to St. James’ Park.

Sadly, it’s unlikely we’ll see that under this regime and the notion of welcoming leading talent to Newcastle United remains absurd.
