Newcastle are interested in signing Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard according to the Daily Star, but Kevin Phillips believes that brining him in could prove difficult.

The former striker shared his view on Newcastle’s current options in attack, stating that Joelinton is unlikely to be sold, unfortunately.

The Brazilian has still only scored twice in the league, which is clearly not good enough for a £40m signing, and that means the attack is a position we need to improve on come the summer.

Targeting Edouard is a very positive step given he has scored 27 goals for the Bhoys this term, though the fact Arsenal are also interested is a little unsettling.

Would you pay £30m for Edouard?

That might decrease our chances of signing the 22-year-old, but even if it costs a significant sum we should not be deterred, and that is a view shared by Phillips.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said:

“Every Premier League club want two or three quality strikers. They have got Dwight Gayle but whether they see him as number one I am not sure.

“It is an area they will be looking at and it will be interesting if they can get this lad from Celtic. There will likely be clubs higher than Newcastle in the Premier League that also want him. £30million nowadays is nothing.”

Of course the future of the club is under doubt currently, but if PIF do indeed takeover the club then moves for players like Edouard will be a lot more realistic, and we could probably expect others like him to come through the door.

Even with Mike Ashley at the helm it is an addition that should be made, as there are very few negatives associated with it. Edouard has a remarkable record in the SPFL, having also made 19 assists this season, and with years ahead of him he could either suit us for a number of years, or be sold on for a profit.

We clearly need a goalscorer since Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll still haven’t found the target this season, thus giving Joelinton little competition, and Edouard seems like he would fit the mould.
